Eschewing the realism preferred by modern footie games, Active Soccer 2 resembles classic overhead fare like Sensible Soccer and Kick Off 2. As such, matches are fast-paced, almost akin to pinball at times. Despite not looking realistic, they still feel close to how you imagine high-octane matches to be.

The controls can be a touch flaky (although they’re rock solid with an MFi game controller) and the game itself is raw, but there’s tons of depth, including championships and full seasons. Starting at the bottom is tough, given that your team’s best strikers won’t be able to hit a barn door that’s right in front of them, but the game rewards perseverance.

Play as Chelsea on ‘easy’ by all means if you want to dive in and rule the footie world. For the grafters, delve into the depths of the Conference and prepare yourself for sore thumbs. Craig Grannell

Very much an indie title, but we’ll take AS2’s flaws and fun over FIFA’s dull TV-style highlights any day.
