Nutshell camera

Christian likes instant results, so making a movie from just three photos is a winner

Yes, the Camera app is good and iMovie a cinch. Vine? Yeah that’s even easier. But when it comes to sending a quick video message with a bit of a humourous effect, Nutshell is just the ticket. In a ‘nutshell’ the app centres around snapping just three pictures, while the app constantly records video in the background. Essentially, they get stitched together to allow for one seamless transition between photos. The end result is a steady capture and you can then adorn your mini movie with fun floating graphics (captions and animations).

The app intelligently zooms in and out as you transition between each photo, all to in an attempt to provide spatial context of what you’re capturing. The captions are location-aware too, so that they seem to hover around the focal point you attached them too. It’s very much like how you see those ‘magnetic’ annotations in today’s documentary programmes. Quite often apps that produce these kinds of creative effects are a bit hit and miss, only lending themselves to a particular kind of video capture, but here you get away with almost any source material. I’ve found that snapping the three photos in quick succession and with moving the iPhone around still results in a good video that can be spruced up with just a few taps.

Nutshell brings life to standard photos, and the results can be shared in all the usual places. It’s fun and free too!
