Staying off the grid

Mac Format - - APPLE TALK -

I have an iPhone 4 that I’m using as a glorified iPod touch. It doesn’t have a SIM in it anymore but I still connect to Wi-Fi. It’s running iOS 8.1 and all my apps keep trying to update automatically. I don’t need or want them to do that – they all work fine as they are. Can I stop them updating without disconnecting from Wi-Fi? Sally-Ann Mumford

Yes. You can this behaviour off for app updates in the iTunes & App Store section of Settings, under Automatic Downloads. You can’t disable updates per app though – it’s either on for all apps, or off for all of them. However, this switch only disables automatic downloading of updates. They can still be installed manually from the App Store’s Updates tab.
