HOW TO | Create a Photo Book

Projects tab

As with iPhoto, Apple’s new Photos app makes it easy to share photos online. But sometimes it’s good to do things the oldfashioned way, so Photos includes a Projects tab that helps you design and print high-quality photo books and other documents.

Click + in the top-right corner of the Photos window to create a new project. There are several options here, including the ability to create video slideshows, printed calendars and cards. However, we want to create a photo album – which Photos refers to as a ‘book’.

Classic design

Photos can design books in a number of formats. The Classic style is a high-quality hardcover with a wide, rectangular layout that includes a dust-jacket and protective sleeve. You can also opt for a smaller, square hardcover book, or a less expensive softcover book.

Pages and prices

Photos can check online and tell you the latest prices for various formats. Prices start at £6.99 for a softcover book, and go up to £34.99 for the largest Classic book format. Prices include 20 inside pages, plus the front and back covers, but you can pay extra for more pages.

Templates themes

Once you’ve chosen the format you will be presented with a series of themes. These are templates with different layouts for the front and back covers, and inside pages. You can still customise the layout later, so for now just choose any theme you like the look of.

Instant layout

Here’s the plan of our book. Each page has a slightly different design to add variety but, as mentioned, you can change the layout as you go along. The next step is to find the photos we want to use in the book, so we just click the ‘Add Photos’ button in the bottom-right corner.

Adding photos

Photos now takes us into its main library and shows us all our photos organised by date. We can browse through them and click on ones we want to use, and these are highlighted with a blue tick mark. We can choose as many photos as we want, and then just click the ‘Add’ button.

The in tray

Photos are placed in the tray at the bottom of the screen. You can drag and drop photos from the tray onto a page. You can also select multiple photos then click the Auto-Fill button. Photos will try to select the best photos for each page and insert them automatically.
