HOW WE TESTED

COMPARING THE SERVICES

Mac Format - - RATED -

We’ve gathered some of the most interesting services around right now – aside from Apple of course. There are the big players, Spotify and Google Play Music All Access, then there are the long-established Deezer, Rdio and Tidal (recently bought and relaunched by Jay-Z). And finally we’ve chosen Blinkbox, formerly owned by Tesco.

All of these services can stream on desktop and mobile, so we wanted to see what set them apart. Do they have a Mac app? Is there an option to have higher quality music streaming even if it costs more? All the services vary slightly in terms of the levels of service offered, even if many tiers are similarly priced – a sign that competition is alive. While many services are currently similarly priced for certain tiers (£9.99 is a favoured sum per month), this might change as more companies enter this already crowded market.

It’s also worth remembering some services have vastly better music catalogues than others. All the services we have on test offer a good array of artists but you won’t any Beatles songs on any of them, for example, because of their deal with Apple.

All services stream adequately on desktop and mobile.
