Af­ford­able 3D print­ers

It still costs a lot, but you’d do well to avoid those print­ers cost­ing around £500 for now

£1,749 Man­u­fac­turer Ul­ti­maker, ul­ti­maker.com Re­quire­ments OS X 10.7 or higher (for Cura soft­ware) De­spite sit­ting at the more ex­pen­sive end of the home printer mar­ket, the Ul­ti­maker 2 has won nu­mer­ous plau­dits since it was re­leased at the end of 2013. It has a 20-mi­cron layer res­o­lu­tion, can print at speeds from 30mm/s to 300mm/s, and has a print area of 223x223x205mm. The Ul­ti­maker 2 also has a fan­tas­tic com­pan­ion app in Cura, which is one of the eas­i­est 3D slicer apps cur­rently avail­able. Cal­i­brat­ing the printer is a sim­ple process, and prints are stored on, and read from, a re­mov­able SD card.

OUR VER­DICT: The Ul­ti­maker 2 is rec­om­mended for any­one that’s happy to pay a bit more for a home 3D printer.
