Drag and drop with Circles
Speed up the way you transfer text, images and other files
Speed up the way you transfer text, images and other files between apps and workspaces
A shortcoming of Finder rears its head when you pick up a file to drag it somewhere, only to find your chosen destination isn’t easily accessible, whether that’s another folder, app or desktop Space. Circles is a clever free app that makes drag and drop a happier, less frustrating experience.
It sits unobtrusively in the background, springing to life when you drag a file, image or snippet of text to the left-hand edge of the screen. A trigger icon will appear – drag your selection over this to reveal five circles. Drag a snippet or file to the middle one, and it goes in a holding area. Now, all you need to do is browse to your destination and drag the item back out to it. It’s a convenient way to copy files between folders, while text fragments and images can be imported into supported apps across multiple Spaces.
The other four circles perform userdefined actions on your selected items – up to three actions can be configured for each circle (use ≈, å and ç to switch between them). Supported actions include copying or moving selected items to a pre-defined folder or opening them in a specific app. A Utilities button reveals more, from resizing an image to FTP uploading.
Circles is still a little rough around the edges, but is regularly adding features and polishing existing ones. Discover how it can transform the way you drag and drop on your Mac. Nick Peers
