or higher Although there are numerous ways to tailor the way your Mac works, the dexterity with which you can control when it starts up, shuts down and when apps open, leaves a lot to be desired. You can specify that you always want certain apps to open at login, and OS X can reopen those – and their documents – that you were using in your previous session, but there isn’t a great deal of control on offer beyond those basic settings.

iBeeZz (€12.50 – about £8.84, ibeezz. com) offers you a degree of control that OS X doesn’t. It enables you to schedule startup, shutdown, and the closing and opening of apps – and there are custom settings for iTunes so you can, say, wake up to a favourite playlist. iBeeZz installs as a pane in System Preferences, and has a simple interface that gives you more control over how your Mac opens, with discrete settings for every day of the week. This degree of customisation is particularly charming because it makes your Mac feel that little bit more personal – like it’s working to your routine and not the other way around!
