Why does my Mac get a self-as­signed IP ad­dress?

If your Mac gets an IP ad­dress of around, it means you haven’t as­signed it a fixed ad­dress, and it can’t find a DHCP server in your router or ac­cess point. Check those, its net­work con­nec­tions, and run Net­work Di­ag­nos­tics in /Sys­tem/ Li­brary/CoreSer­vices, and Net­work Util­ity and Wire­less Di­ag­nos­tics in Ap­pli­ca­tions there.
