Sid Meier's Civilization series has defined turn-based strategy games, and Civ VI is another corker to add to the series. The objective, as always, is to explore the world and rise to the top through conquest or diplomacy – or both. Veteran Civilization players will quickly find their feet with the familiar game mechanic, while still being challenged by the new depth and variety.

For one thing, the new Districts system makes city building a more sprawling affair, letting you place buildings according to their strategic importance within your city. The map, too, has been improved to make it easier to see exactly what is happening at a glance.

These changes and more add up to a game that is immersive even for the notoriously engrossing Civilization series. It'll keep you coming back, if only for one more turn…
