The team’s views on the latest Apple tech

It would certainly be a change of approach for Apple after years of big annual updates. In a way, I’d be disappointed – I like new stuff! Me too. I was dismayed that HomePod was released without AirPlay 2, but I’d rather see Apple take the time to perfect its software than make the kind of mistakes we’ve been seeing in High Sierra. Fair point. Audio crackling on iPhone 8 really wound me up, and more serious issues such as macOS security have been pretty alarming. A relentless churn out of new features isn’t particularly healthy for Apple’s engineers. Tying themselves to creating headline features every autumn can’t be easy to achieve. iPhone’s pretty mature now, so I suppose this is a good point for Apple to take a step back and take stock of what to address. Apple has recently laid important groundwork with Metal, APFS and other tech. That’s great, but it definitely feels like people are crying out for improved quality and stability. Actually, I think you’ve convinced me that flash new features aren’t everything. Hang on – there will still be new features! There just won’t be such pressure to launch things in part-finished form.

“so , apple ’s going to foc us on improve ments not feat ures ?”
