Share precious memories in Photos

Family photos were made to be shared and the Photos app makes that easy

-

As we discovered earlier, Family Sharing pools your storage space, but not your

whole family’s photo libraries. To do that, you need to use iCloud Photo Sharing. You can share with anybody who has an iCloud account, not just family members, and each album can be shared with up to 100 people.

To start sharing, you first need to switch on the iCloud Photo Sharing feature. On an iOS device it’s in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos. On a Mac, go to > System Preferences > iCloud > Options. On Apple TV, look in Settings > iCloud > iCloud Photos Settings.

Once that’s done, you can start sharing photos and videos. In iOS, open the Photos app, tap the Shared tab, then tap the + symbol to create a new shared album. On your Mac, open Photos and click Shared in the sidebar. If you aren’t already sharing anything, you’ll just see a link labelled Activity. Click it, then Start Sharing.

Name your shared album and you’ll then be prompted to choose the people you want to invite. Once you’ve chosen them, tap Create. This publishes your album and sends invitations via email or iMessage.

Now it’s time to add the photos and/or videos you want other people to see. To do that, go to the relevant album and tap Select. Tap the items you want to add to the shared album, then tap the Share icon. (On a Mac, hold and click items to add to your selection.) Next, choose iCloud Photo Sharing and tell Photos which shared album (if you have more than one) to add your selection to. It can take a while for things to upload to iCloud.

From now on, when you add to that album, the people subscribed to it will be notified. If you want, they can contribute too – say, to collate photos of an event. To allow that, tap People (on iOS) or click the silhouette of a person in the toolbar (Mac) and turn on Subscribers Can Post.
