How to Use the Apple TV Remote app

Why use the app

The free Apple TV Remote app runs on iOS 9 and iOS 10 devices, and can control second-gen and third-gen Apple TVs. Even if you have an iOS 11 device, it offers features and shortcuts that the system’s built-in remote lacks.

Audio and subtitles

The app provides faster access than swiping down during playback to navigate audio/subtitle options on your TV: tap Details, then the bottom center icon to choose on iOS. There’s a slider for skimming to a specific time, too.

Gamepad mode

When in a game that supports game controllers, a gamepad icon is shown at the top of the screen. Tap it to use simplified controls in landscape orientation — they can’t be customized, so it’s a stretch on Plus-size iPhones.
