Mac unit shipments were down 13% from the June quarter of 2017, and revenue was down 5%. Apple sold just 3.72m Macs, the lowest figure in a quarter since the June quarter 2010. Macrumors.com also notes this is the first time Apple has sold fewer than four million Macs in a quarter since Q3 2013. One reason for this, it says, is that the Mac line is seen as dated: although the iMac Pro came out four months earlier, no other model had been updated since June 2017, when the 12-inch MacBook and iMac lines were revised. MacBook Air is essentially unchanged since March 2015, Mac mini since October 2014, and Mac Pro since December 2013. Refreshed MacBook Pro models didn’t launch till 12 days after the close of the quarter.

Even so, Apple said it still recorded double–digit year–over–year growth in its active installed base of Macs last quarter, reaching a new all–time high, and Tim Cook said nearly 60% of purchasers were new to the Mac.
