BEV Jackson is this month’s City of Mandurah Local Legend.

A member of Mandurah Country Club for 54 years, the keen golfer saw an opportunity to mix her love for the sport and her drive to contribute to the community when the local Peel Zonta Club received a passionate letter from the Queen Elizabeth II Cancer Centre.

The centre was desperate for support for breast cancer research after government cutbacks and needed help.

Mrs Jackson came up with a plan to host a fundraising golf day.

The club raised $1500 that first day at Pinjarra Golf Club and almost 25 years later more than $230,000 has been raised.

Over that time, Mrs Jackson has been the driving force behind the initiative.

But this is only part of the work she does for the community.

She was a charter member of the first Peel Zonta Club.

“We are heavily into the issue of domestic violence, we provide birthing kits and we support women in the community,’’ Mrs Jackson said.

“But I also get lots out of being a member – it’s character building to help the community. I would encourage young women to join.”

Mandurah Mayor Rhys Williams said Mrs Jackson’s contribution to Mandurah had been mentioned by many people, including former mayor Paddi Creevey.

“For almost a quarter of a century Bev has given her time and energy to breast cancer research,’’ he said.
