KING OF THE COURT
WE SHOOT SOME HOOPS AND QUESTIONS WITH SYDNEY KING’S TOM GARLEPP
MANIA: How did you get into basketball? TOM: “I saw it on TV as kid, when guys like Michael Jordan were playing in the NBA, and there were exciting players and teams in the NBL like Andrew Gaze and my hometown's Perth Wildcats. I picked up a basketball and started playing. I've never looked back!"
MANIA: Do you have a favourite NBA team and player? TOM: “Kevin Durant is one of my favourites. But now that he's switched teams, I might have to find a new one.”
MANIA: How do you keep your cool while on the court? TOM: "Focusing on your breathing helps. If you can remember to ground yourself with something like that, it'll relax you.”
MANIA: Do you have any pre-game good luck rituals? TOM: “Not really. I just try to make sure I'm not looking sloppy. If you feel like you look good, then you'll feel good and you can play good."
MANIA: What skills does a team captain need? TOM: “You need to be able to listen and not get too emotional."
MANIA: Do you have any career highlights? TOM: “Being on a team that makes the final is something I liked and want to achieve again. When the team does well and makes the finals, those are the things that I fondly remember most."
MANIA: The 2016/17 is starting up soon. Which team are you most looking forward to playing – and which team will present the biggest challenge? TOM: “In the past it's been a little bit more lopsided in terms of competition across the board. But now the competition has become a lot stronger, so I couldn't really single anyone out because everyone's gotten a lot better."
MANIA: Are there any goals you want to achieve this season? TOM: "Just to get back into the finals is a nice goal for me."
Keep practising and never give up!
