Help needed to fight weed
THE Warren Catchments Council is calling for volunteers to help remove an invasive weed in and around the Windy Harbour Settlement.
The WCC, in conjunction with the Shire of Manjimup, the South West Catchments Council, the Manjimup Weed Action Group and the Department of Parks and Wildlife has been working on the control of Victorian teatree, also known as coastal teatree.
The weed has taken over extensive areas of coastal heathland and sand dunes in the Windy Harbour area and competes with native vegetation and threatens habitat for native birds and animals.
Control methods include hand pulling smaller plants, chemical control by spraying and mechanical removal and mulching of larger plants. It has been kept out of the D’Entrecasteaux National Park.
WCC is coordinating two days for community volunteers to help with the hand removal of the weed in the dune systems to the southeast of the settlement on July 7 and 8.
