Forestry posts winning total
FORESTRY proved the masters of wet weather cricket, accounting for Manjimup by 44 runs at Collier Street on Saturday.
With dark skies looming and drizzle throughout play, Manjimup won the toss and elected to bowl, with opener Kallan Fall (68) and first drop Daniel Ward (27) scoring freely but the side fell to 2/41.
Fall kept the runs ticking over despite losing a number of batting partners.
The introduction of Corey Gibellini (56no) set the tone for a 71-run partnership for the 5th wicket, with Manjimup’s bowling attack faltering in the wet as the ball deteriorated, with dropped catches and miss-fielding compounding the issue.
Following the dismissal of Fall, with the score sitting comfortably on 5/163, Gibellini added to the total with zeal, combining with Nicholas Barton (15) to form a quick-fire, unbeaten 43-run partnership for the 7th wicket and push the total to 6/219 after 45 overs.
Cameron Harris collected 2/51 off 9 overs and Jono Millar chimed in with 1/38 off 9 overs with three maidens, with Evan Phillips Johns (1/38 off 7 overs) and Rohan Barber (1/23 off 4 overs) also snaring wickets.
Manjimup’s run chase began with earnest, with Dane Raper (55) hitting powerfully to provide the home side a sufficient run rate to chase down the score.
Unfortunately, his batting partners could not remain out there long enough to provide him with sufficient run support and his dismissal left Manjimup 4/84 with the weather deteriorating.
A 39-run partnership for the 5th wicket between Harris (29) and Millar (25) gave them a small glimmer of hope of chasing down the formidable total.
Following Harris’ dismissal, an excellent performance from debutant Rohan Barber (22no) combined with Millar for a hard-running, 42-run partnership for the 7th wicket.
However, Forestry held on to record a well-deserved victory, with Manjimup finishing on 8/175 after 45 overs.
Debutante brothers Daniel (2/12 off 3 overs) and Brodie Jones (1/23 off 5 overs) were excellent for the consistent Forestry bowling attack, Ward (1/23 off 9 overs), Jethro Namnik (1/27 off 6 overs), Kane Aitken (1/32 off 9 overs), Barton (1/29 off 8 overs) and Reece Edwards (1/23 off 5 overs).
This Saturday Manjimup travel to Boyup Brook while Forestry host Dingup at Collier Street, also on Saturday.
Forestry batsman Kallan Fall was the top scorer for his team with 68 runs.
Callum Sanders was an economic bowler, racking up only 10 runs in three overs.
Mat Johnston, of Forestry, makes 10 runs on Saturday.
