Cup winner is a grinner
A lifelong Harvey resident won two tickets to the Melbourne Cup after her name was drawn in The West Australian Regional Newspaper Group competition.
Domenica Zappia said she had forgotten about entering the competition and thought it was a mistake when she received her winning phone call.
“It’s really amazing to me, to win something at my age. I’m 82 and I’ve never won anything before,” Mrs Zappia said.
An avid gardener, Mrs Zappia said she was excited to see all the floral displays on the big day.
“I’m just looking forward to the whole trip,” Mrs Zappia said.
“I believe the roses are magnificent and I’m a lover of roses.” Mrs Zappia said she had never been to any horseracing event and had not picked a Melbourne Cup winner.
But she did plan on having a cheeky punt on the race this year.
Ms Zappia said she was thankful to the The West Australian Regional Newspapers for running the competition.
Mrs Zappia said she had lived in Harvey for 62 years, having grown up on the family farm in Benger before that.
Daughter Joyce Sorgiovanni said she had been to the Melbourne Cup and would show her mother the ropes.
“She deserves it. It’s very exciting for Mum,” Mrs Sorgiovanni said.
