A PETITION signed by 123 local residents was presented to Mansfield Shire Council at its monthly meeting last Tuesday.

Residents have requested the opening times of the Mansfield Aquatic Centre – council owned outdoor swimming pool – be reviewed to allow for more early morning swimmers to take advantage of lane lapping.

Fiona Greenway a ddressed council saying there were many people who wanted to swim as their daily exercise early in the morning – before working hours – however, the pool was only open two days a week to accommodate Mansfield Swimming Club members.

Presenting f urther facts and figures Ms Greenway said more workers are now opting to swimming for their exercise and preferred mornings.

“Opening early on Tuesday and Thursday will assist to reduce the congestion when the swim club is training,” Ms Greenway said.

The pool currently opens early on Monday and Wednesday mornings to accommodate the swim club training sessions.

Ms Greenway s uggested t o council t hat a new contract be entered into for the next season and could include revised hours.

“The pool also needs to raise its profile and to encourage more patrons,” she said.

She said residents were not asking council to extend the opening hours of the pool but to review its opening hours to accommodate patrons when they wanted to use it and times more convenient to them.

Ms Greenway pointed out that at times the pool was open but no-one was there.

She al s o t ol d c ouncil t hat swimming is good for health and fitness which supports Council’s Health and Wellbeing Plan, has physical benefits being a low impact exercise and alleviates stress – lowering mental health issues.

Ms Greenway pointed out to councillors that other municipalities such as Benalla and Murrindindi include early morning swimming hours and have adjusted t heir opening hours according to usage throughout the day.

Mansfield Shire chief executive officer Alex Green said before the beginning of the next season the contract would be up for renewal and this would give council an opportunity to look at operational hours of the pool.

OPEN EARLY: Residents have called for a revision of opening hours for the Mansfield swimming pool in summer to accommodate early morning lap swimmers.
