New kids on the block with new band - Running in the Dark

Mansfield Courier - - OPINIONS/PEOPLE -

WHAT started off as a joke for three musical Mansfield Secondary College students has taken on a life of its own, and the result is ‘Running in the Dark’.

Freya Gunn, Julian Holland and Josh Jenkins have started a band, and they are currently looking for other likeminded musicians to jump on board.

“We all just kind of fell into it one day,” Freya explained.

“We were sitting around joking about having a band, and then we were just like, why not do it.”

Julian has been drumming for six years, and is surprisingly adept at the piano as well.

Running in the Dark is not his first foray into group music, as he has worked as a DJ out of school, and has a particular interest in electronic c music.

Josh is a bass guitarist, and likes music that features heavy guitar riffs such as in The Offspring and AC/DC.

Freya, who is the more vocal of the group, said she hoped Running i n t he Dark would develop into a band that would have rock, punk and alternate sounds woven into it.

“Right now, we are still just trying to figure things out,” she said.

“We really just like having an excuse to play together and enjoy music.”

Although the band has not yet appointed one of them as the main singer – hoping for someone with killer vocals will come forward – Freya has said she will take the microphone if need be.

“I’d prefer not to sing, but I will if no one else wants to step up,” she said.

Ideally, Running in the Dark is about bringing likeminded people together to enjoy music.

As the students explained, if they happen to get a gig at some stage in the future, so much the better.
