Council posts strong half year financial result

Mansfield Courier - - OPINIONS/PEOPLE -

WHILE Mansfield Shire Council struggles to meet budgeting restraints, Benalla council has realised a $442,000 favourable operating result for the half year to December 31, 2016.

The result includes a $285,000 saving in employee costs after the 2016 staff restructure.

This comes from an internally driven strategy of reducing overheads and staff numbers, realising a $1.1M reduction in operating costs.

Benalla council chief executive officer Tony McIlroy said “The result is a response to the tightening of financial resources, which has been influenced by the State Government rate cap of 2.5 per cent for 2016/17 and which will be two per cent for 2017/18.

“The half year mark is a critical point in determining the full year forecast to June 30, 2017 and is the foundation for the 2017/18 budget,” Mr McIlroy said.
