‘Fair’ rates for farm­ers, with cap and in­de­pen­dent in­quiry

CINDY McLeish (MLA, Eil­don) has an­nounced a Lib­eral gov­ern­ment will cap lo­cal gov­ern­ment rates for farm­ers if elected this Novem­ber.

“Vic­to­rian farm­ers are call­ing for an­swers and ac­tion af­ter some shires im­posed dra­matic rate in­creases this year while other shires passed mod­est or even re­duced farm rates,” Ms McLeish said.

“The Lib­er­als are com­mit­ted to eas­ing the cost of liv­ing, and that in­cludes an as­sur­ance of fairer rates for all our farm­ers.”

Ms McLeish said a Lib­eral gov­ern­ment would es­tab­lish an in­de­pen­dent in­quiry into farm rates across the state.

“We will ini­ti­ate an in­de­pen­dent in­quiry into farm rates in Vic­to­ria and ap­ply the rate cap limit to all rat­ing cat­e­gories while the in­quiry is con­ducted,” Ms McLeish said.

“The in­quiry will be led by terms of ref­er­ence will di­rect that the in­quiry must de­liver ac­tion­able rec­om­men­da­tions that help to make rates fair for farm­ers across Vic­to­ria.

“The terms of ref­er­ence will en­sure com­pre­hen­sive con­sul­ta­tion with farm­ers and the VFF is un­der­taken.
