Delatite fall 30 runs short of win

Mansfield Courier - - COURIER SPORT - By PAUL DUNCAN

THE Delatite 1st XI travelled to the Norm Minns Oval in Wangaratta for the day/night match against the Wangaratta Magpies in last Saturday’s fixture of WDCA ‘A’ Grade cricket.

The Magpies won the toss and had no hesitation electing to bat to make use of the daylight hours and made 7/146 after their allocated 40 overs.

Mitch Purcell and Matt Stevenson opened the bowling for Delatite and had immediate success that saw both Magpie openers back in the pavilion with just 12 runs on the scoreboard.

However, a 54 run partnership between Matheson and Oates soon put paid to Delatite’s great start that saw Oates dismissed for 24 and Matheson being eventually dismissed for an entertaining 53 from 82 balls faced.

The five Delatite bowlers used all got wickets with Mitch Purcell taking the honours with 2/21 from eight overs and Joel Sanford with 2/31 also from eight overs.

Single wickets each to Matt Stevenson (1/23), Peter Scales (1/27) and Aaron Madsen (1/28) kept the score to 146 but a rather lacklustre fielding exhibition didn’t help to keep the Magpies’ total within easy reach of the Delatite batsmen.

The tea break was taken at 5.45pm and the lights were turned on in readiness for the Delatite innings to commence.

With the loss of the two opening batsmen for just 11 runs on the board, the Delatite team struggled with the pace and accuracy of the Magpies’ bowlers, particularly Stephen Leitch who bowled exceptionally well and finished with 4/22 from his eight over spell.

Mitch Purcell (28), Joel Sanford (11) and the veteran all-rounder Peter Scales (17) were the only Delatite batsmen to reach double figures that saw the visitors dismissed for 9/116 from 40 overs, just 30 runs short of what could season.

They will now have to wait another week to break this disappointing season’s start when they travel north to tackle the Yarrawonga/Mulwala side at the Stan Hargreaves Oval in Yarrawonga.
