A NEW shared cycleway on Goonawarra Dr in Mooloolaba provides a vital connection for cyclists between schools, TAFE and the University of the Sunshine Coast following its completion by Sunshine Coast Council.

It’s the latest in a series of new cycling facilities making it easier for people to ride safely on the Sunshine Coast.

The project was jointly funded by Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants program, with the State Government contributing $275,000 to the project.

Main Roads and Road Safety Acting Minister Steven Miles said the State Government was committed to improving the safety and accessibility of the transport network for cyclists.

“These works are a part of our Cycle Network Local Government Grants program, which has allocated $17 million to cycling projects across Queensland in 2017–18,” Mr Miles said.

❝ Our recent cycle projects make a big difference for anyone riding for transport, fun or exercise.

The project linked the region’s principal cycle network, connecting the underpass under the Sunshine Mwy (at the western end of Goonawarra Dr) to the intersection of Palm Dr.

Division 4 councillor John Connolly said the cycleway project had improved the look of the street with shade trees, in addition to improving access for cyclists and pedestrians.

“Providing easy and safe access for bike riders to travel between some of our key education facilities and other important locations was essential,” Cr Connolly said.
