Dinners through the decades

Back in Time for Dinner, ABC, Tuesday at 8.30pm

GUIDED by host Annabel Crabb (pictured), an Aussie family goes on a time-travelling adventure to learn how the food we eat transformed the way we live, the fabric of the nation and defined family roles.

Starting in post-war 1950s, the Ferrone family will be transported to a different decade each week as they take on the dietary habits, lifestyle, cooking fads and fashions of the era.

When the Ferrones first re-enter their home in 1950 it is unrecognisable. The open-plan kitchen and dining room is gone. Now divided into two tiny rooms, the appliances and marble bench tops have been ripped out. Instead, Laminex lives, and there’s no microwave or fridge.

As if that wasn’t challenging enough, they must also adopt the gender roles of each era.
