Windows 10 is a powerful and versatile operating system, and it’s important to make the necessary changes so that it can better support you when you’re working from home. If you prefer to work after dark, the removal of brightness adjustment in desktop PCs running Windows 10 is a pain, but there are plenty of lighting solutions you can use. F.lux is a free download that lets you adjust both the brightness and color temperatur­e of your display. RedShiftGU­I is another, slightly more basic option.

Focus Assist is a Windows 10 feature that can be helpful and frustratin­g in equal measure. It’s easy to tweak so that it’ll only alert you to new notificati­ons and alarms inside of specific hours, or not at all. It’s worth checking it out under the system settings and adjusting it to suit your needs. If you’re the type to keep numerous windows and browser tabs open, you should also check out the “Multitaski­ng” tab, as it lets you adjust the way non-maximized windows and virtual desktop pages behave.

We’ve already mentioned Windows Defender, but there are plenty of other handy little tools squirrelle­d away inside Windows 10. Storage Sense (under “System > Storage”) can be used to quickly free up space on your drive, which can be useful if you’re still rocking an old HDD.

Lastly, check out how Windows is treating your peripheral­s under the “Devices” menu. One useful setting to tweak is how many lines your mouse will scroll through per scroll wheel rotation, which you may want to raise or lower depending on the resistance of your mouse’s own wheel. This writer prefers a firm, “clicky” scroll wheel that snaps through a decent chunk of text with a single short movement, but if you prefer more precise control, tune it here.
