There is no doubt that as far as the bird world is con­cerned, the swan is the epit­ome of el­e­gance and grace; but ac­cord­ing to many who dwell in a vil­lage for over 50s near the River Frome in Glouces­ter­shire, UK, once each year, dur­ing mat­ing time, th­ese nor­mally an­gelic crit­ters un­dergo a rad­i­cal trans­for­ma­tion, sud­denly be­hav­ing like the spawn of the Devil. The birds re­port­edly wan­der down to the vil­lage from the river and cause havoc, chas­ing af­ter, charg­ing at and at­tack­ing any­one and any­thing they come across. El­derly ladies, tod­dlers, cy­clists, cars and even trucks are all fair game, and the postie is reg­u­larly forced to run the gaunt­let just to de­liver the mail on time. The sit­u­a­tion is ap­par­ently so bad that some res­i­dents are too scared to leave their homes, while oth­ers bravely ven­ture out­side armed with the gar­den hose or a wa­ter pis­tol as their de­fence.
