Thumping win keeps relegation at bay
HEATHCOTE Bowls Club’s division six team recorded a huge 44-shot win over Kangaroo Flat on the weekend in a big boost to the side’s chances of avoiding relegation.
Heathcote sits in eighth spot on the ladder and now has a slight buffer between it and ninth-placed North Bendigo and bottom side Kangaroo Flat.
Division six: Heathcote 112 defeated Kangaroo Flat 68.

Neville Smith made a slow start and was down by eight shots after 12 ends. Fortunately Neville’s team won the next four ends and the last two to draw the game.
Keith Brown had an even game with scores level on the 7th, 9th, 13th and 24th ends. Keith’s team scored two shots on the last end to win by those two shots.
Basil Kapoulitsa made an even start and led by a shot after the 12th end. Basil’s team slowly drew away and despite losing the last end went on to record a five-shot win.
Ray Anderson lost the first end but then won the next nine to lead by 21 shots. Ray’s team kept up the pressure, losing only three more ends to have a huge 37-shot win.
Heatchcote’s division three side travelled to Bendigo East needing to win but were soundly defeated by 33 shots.
The loss leaves the side in sixth spot, three games out of the top four.

Greg Speirs made an even start with scores level on the 10th, 14th and 16th ends. Greg’s team took control, losing only three more ends and won by 10 shots.
Brian Taylor made a slow start and by the 12th end trailed by six shots. Brian’s team only won two more ends and went on to lose by 21 shots.
Bill Gardiner made a poor start, losing the first 10 ends to trail by 19 shots. Despite their best effort, Bill’s team were unable to make any headway and lost by 31 shots. Weekend Pennant Teams Division 3: Heathcote vs. Kangaroo Flat at Heathcote.

Chris’ team finished well, winning seven of the last nine ends to record a 10-shot win.
Rae Craig started slowly and by the 15th end was down by 15 shots. Despite scoring four shots on the 22nd, Rae’s team went down by 18 shots.
Eileen O’Brien made an even start with scores level on the 9th and 17th ends. Eileen’s team then took control and after scoring two shots on last end won by 10 shots.

The only three-game winners were Smokey Dawson (s) and John Hutson (three wins, 46 points, +15 shots). Runners-up were Rae Craig (s) and Lorraine Speirs (two wins, 36 points, +16 shots).
