Colourful weekend of Spanish flavour
HEATHCOTE’S streets will be once again ablaze with colour, music and dancing as the annual El Rocio Spanish Festival rolls into town.
The event will kick off on Friday morning and run all weekend with a mix of religious and traditional Spanish celebrations.
Each day a pilgrimage walk splashes Spanish culture onto Heathcote’s streets with Spanish horses, traditional clothes, carts decorated with flowers and flamenco dancing.
Festival president Teresa Martinez said she fell in love with Heathcote when she first came here and is pleased to come back for the sixth time.
‘‘It is a nice place and the walking we do is lovely,’’ she said.
‘‘The festival is for everyone and if people want to join us on the walk that would be fantastic.
‘‘It will give them an idea of what we are doing.’’
Friday will begin with a traditional Spanish mass before the first pilgrimage begins.
Dinner on Friday and Saturday and lunch on Sunday will be at the RSL and Ms Martinez urges everyone to book before hand.
‘‘It would be good if people could call before hand for dinner as we are doing all the cooking and we need to know how many,’’ she said.
Ms Martinez also encourages anyone with horses to bring them down and get them involved in the pilgrimage each day.
Tickets can be purchased from the Heathcote Visitor Centre or by calling 9763 9327.
The El Rocio Spanish Festival returns to Heathcote on Friday.
