Pen­nant side falls short of huge up­set

HEATH­COTE’S di­vi­sion three pen­nant bowls team came close to up­set­ting top side White Hills on the week­end, only to fal­ter in the con­clud­ing stages of the game.

Need­ing to win to keep its hopes of avoid­ing rel­e­ga­tion alive, Heath­cote led all day but stut­tered over the last ends to go down by 11 shots.

Di­vi­sion 3: Heath­cote 99 White Hills 110

Greg Speirs17 lost to S O’Con­nor 38; Brian Tay­lor 25 lost to P Brown 35; John McGil­livray 34 de­feated M An­der­son 16; Bill Gar­diner 23 de­feated S Ar­buckle 21.

Greg Speirs won the first three ends but then strug­gled to be down by seven shots af­ter 13 ends.

Greg’s team only man­aged to win three more ends and were beaten by 21 shots.

Brian Tay­lor started well and led by seven shots by the 14th end. Brian’s lost team then strug­gled, win­ning only four more ends to lose by 10 shots.

John McGil­livray made a great start win­ning 10 of the first 12 ends to lead by 18 shots. De­spite los­ing the last five ends John’s team won by 16 shots.

Bill Gar­diner had an even game with scores level on the 18th, 22nd and 24th ends. Bill’s team scored two shots on the last end to win.

Heath­cote’s di­vi­sion six side strug­gled all day against fifth-placed Wood­bury and lost by 38 shots.

Di­vi­sion 6: Heath­cote 69 lost to Wood­bury 97

Keith Brown 12 lost to B Hickey 28; Ray An­der­son 13 lost to B Shay 25; Basil Kapoulitsa 29 de­feated R Ni­chols 14; Eileen O’Brien 15 lost to B Brown 30.

Keith Brown strug­gled early and was down by 11 shots af­ter 13 ends. Keith’s team were only able to win three more ends and went down by 18 shots.

Ray An­der­son made a poor start los­ing five of the first six ends to trail by 10 shots af­ter 14 ends. De­spite win­ning four of the last six ends Ray’s team lost by 12 shots.

Basil Kapoulitsa made a good start win­ning five of the first six ends and by the 15th end led by 12 shots. Basil’s team won the last three ends to record a 15-shot win.

Eileen O’Brien started slowly and trailed by 15 shots af­ter 13 ends. Shots and ends were then shared but the lead was too big and Eileen’s team lost by 15 shots. Eileen O’Brien 26 de­feated D San­ton 16; Dot Cu­ta­jar 26 de­feated G Cullen 19; Chris Cail 25 de­feated N Berry 21.

Eileen O’Brien made a great start win­ning the first six ends and led by 13 shots af­ter 13 ends. De­spite los­ing four shots on the 19th and 20th ends Eileen’s team went on to win by 10 shots.

Dot Cu­ta­jar had an even start with the scores level af­ter nine ends. The game re­mained even un­til the 23rd end when Dots team scored five shots and fi­nally won by seven shots.

Chris Cail won the first seven ends and was lead­ing by 16 shots by the 14th end. Chris’ team could only win two more ends but held on to win by four shots.
