Pennant side falls short of huge upset
HEATHCOTE’S division three pennant bowls team came close to upsetting top side White Hills on the weekend, only to falter in the concluding stages of the game.
Needing to win to keep its hopes of avoiding relegation alive, Heathcote led all day but stuttered over the last ends to go down by 11 shots.
Division 3: Heathcote 99 White Hills 110
Greg Speirs17 lost to S O’Connor 38; Brian Taylor 25 lost to P Brown 35; John McGillivray 34 defeated M Anderson 16; Bill Gardiner 23 defeated S Arbuckle 21.
Greg Speirs won the first three ends but then struggled to be down by seven shots after 13 ends.
Greg’s team only managed to win three more ends and were beaten by 21 shots.
Brian Taylor started well and led by seven shots by the 14th end. Brian’s lost team then struggled, winning only four more ends to lose by 10 shots.
John McGillivray made a great start winning 10 of the first 12 ends to lead by 18 shots. Despite losing the last five ends John’s team won by 16 shots.
Bill Gardiner had an even game with scores level on the 18th, 22nd and 24th ends. Bill’s team scored two shots on the last end to win.
Heathcote’s division six side struggled all day against fifth-placed Woodbury and lost by 38 shots.

Keith Brown 12 lost to B Hickey 28; Ray Anderson 13 lost to B Shay 25; Basil Kapoulitsa 29 defeated R Nichols 14; Eileen O’Brien 15 lost to B Brown 30.
Keith Brown struggled early and was down by 11 shots after 13 ends. Keith’s team were only able to win three more ends and went down by 18 shots.
Ray Anderson made a poor start losing five of the first six ends to trail by 10 shots after 14 ends. Despite winning four of the last six ends Ray’s team lost by 12 shots.
Basil Kapoulitsa made a good start winning five of the first six ends and by the 15th end led by 12 shots. Basil’s team won the last three ends to record a 15-shot win.
Eileen O’Brien started slowly and trailed by 15 shots after 13 ends. Shots and ends were then shared but the lead was too big and Eileen’s team lost by 15 shots. Eileen O’Brien 26 defeated D Santon 16; Dot Cutajar 26 defeated G Cullen 19; Chris Cail 25 defeated N Berry 21.
Eileen O’Brien made a great start winning the first six ends and led by 13 shots after 13 ends. Despite losing four shots on the 19th and 20th ends Eileen’s team went on to win by 10 shots.
Dot Cutajar had an even start with the scores level after nine ends. The game remained even until the 23rd end when Dots team scored five shots and finally won by seven shots.
Chris Cail won the first seven ends and was leading by 16 shots by the 14th end. Chris’ team could only win two more ends but held on to win by four shots.
