Unbeaten Saints eye off a flag
HEATHCOTE’S under 12 football team headed to Kyneton on Saturday for another top of the ladder showdown in its final game of the home and away season in the Bendigo Junior Football League.
With snow threatening and mud underfoot, keeping possession was never going to be easy.
Nik Hansson and Tanika Cook both in fine form late in the season, managed to get the ball to the sure arms of Ollie Ayres in the square, securing the Saints first goal of the match.
In a game where goals were hard to come by, the Saints’ littlest played their best running attack game and Kyneton players were unable to catch them.
Ryan Foster, Damon Ryan-May, Jimmy Pringle and Blake Maiden were all involved and it finally finished with a goal to Jesse Bruce whose facial mud-paint had Kyneton scared.
Seth Creevey, new to the ruck position, was combining well with both Tommy and Kody Johnson to get the ball to the captain Brayden Ferguson who kicked true for Heathcote’s third goal before the half-time break.
The third quarter saw some points piled on by both teams.
Heathcote’s backline superstar Callum Devine was really in his element, often defending against two players, before help arrived from the girl squad of Lexy Jorgenson-Neave, Tilly Edsall-French, Brooke Maiden and Tanika Cook to clear the ball back into attack.
Heathcote’s tackling, direct kicking and strong marking were a big feature in the final term when Tommy Johnson took a great overhead mark to slam another goal onto the scoreboard.
Fergo soon cleared the centre booting to Damo Ryan-May who shot one to the goal square and whilst Ollie Ayres wrapped up two players Harrison Ferguson pounced in true style to finish the game with the final goal before the siren.
Congratulations Saints on an undefeated season!
The club would like to thank Ian Edwards who umpired and was also NOT immune to the mud! Train hard and bring home the flag, Saints! Results: Heathcote 5.6 (36) def Kyneton 1.5 (11)
