Fireys home af­ter hard slog in Gipp­s­land

FIRE­FIGHT­ERS from Heathcote re­turned home safe and sound on Mon­day af­ter five days of fight­ing bush­fires around Gipp­s­land.

A task­force of 16 Cen­tral Vic­to­rian For­est Fire Man­age­ment Vic­to­ria fire­fight­ers from Heathcote, Bendigo, St Ar­naud, Mary­bor­ough and Avoca worked 12 to 16-hour days on the Sunny Point fire in the Tambo fire dis­trict, where they en­dured sev­eral days of rake hoe­ing in ar­du­ous ter­rain to strengthen con­tain­ment lines.

The task­force joined more than 140 per­son­nel from the CFA and other agen­cies to bat­tle the blaze.

The Gipp­s­land bush­fires have burned more than 6,500 hectares so far.
