Fireys home after hard slog in Gippsland
FIREFIGHTERS from Heathcote returned home safe and sound on Monday after five days of fighting bushfires around Gippsland.
A taskforce of 16 Central Victorian Forest Fire Management Victoria firefighters from Heathcote, Bendigo, St Arnaud, Maryborough and Avoca worked 12 to 16-hour days on the Sunny Point fire in the Tambo fire district, where they endured several days of rake hoeing in arduous terrain to strengthen containment lines.
The taskforce joined more than 140 personnel from the CFA and other agencies to battle the blaze.
The Gippsland bushfires have burned more than 6,500 hectares so far.
