Heathcote RSL subbranch president Miles Humphrey pauses to pay his respects after laying a wreath at the cenotaph.

ABOUT 100 residents paid their respects at the Heathcote Remembrance Day service on Saturday.

The service held at the Heathcote RSL Hall included students from local schools as well as special guests Councillor Yvonne Wrigglesworth and Captain Aaron Ridgeway from the School of Artillery at Puckapunyal.

Wreaths were laid at the foot of the cenotaph along with poppies to remember all those who died during conflicts in which Australia has been involved.

Heathcote RSL sub-branch president Miles Humphrey said while the event was slightly smaller than some years, residents were happy to stay around.

“The numbers were slightly down, however people stayed for quite a few hours after to have a chat and catch up,” Mr Humphrey said.

“This year was the centenary of the worst year in the First World War; it was also the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Milne Bay and Australia’s efforts in the Kokoda campaign.

“The upgrading of the memorial meant we were able to commemorate battles in Iraq, Afghanistan and Australian peacekeeping missions.

“That is especially important as this year marks the 70th anniversary of Australia’s involvement in peacekeeping efforts.’’

City of Greater Bendigo councillor Yvonne Wrigglesworth said Heathcote has strong community support towards commemorations.

“Heathcote RSL is such a strong branch, and as a part of City of Greater Bendigo we’re proud to show our support to remember those who’ve served,” Ms Wrigglesworth said.

“To see the assembly of people here today was just wonderful, Heathcote has such a strong legacy.

“There’s always a great amount of people at these events in Heathcote. The support for ANZAC and Remembrance Day is overwhelming.”
