Klemke quick to clean up

A STUNNING bowling performance from Brayden Klemke has shored up Heathcote Cricket Club’s position in the top four of the Northern United Cricket Association.

The opening bowler snared the incredible figures of 6/19 as Heathcote routed Goornong for 49 on Saturday at Barrack Reserve.

Heathcote’s opening batting combination of Luke Bell (41) and Pat Ring (24) scored more in their 60-run partnership than the opposition’s team total.

Heathcote was eventually all out for 144 and with fifth-placed Raywood losing on the weekend to Bagshot, the Saints now have some breathing space in securing a finals berth.

The previous round Heathcote was forced to forfeit which left it only only one game clear of Raywood but Saturday’s win has restored the twogame buffer.

It was Heathcote’s first game since the Christmas/New Year break due to the previous round’s forfeit and the influence of the weather.

‘‘We had a lot of people away due to the long weekend so we had to forfeit which was a bit unfortunate,’’ Heathcote captain Corey Gilmore said.

‘‘It was good to get the win on Saturday. It puts us in a good position, two games ahead in fourth spot.

‘‘Raywood is the only team that can get us know and we’ve got them in the last round.’’

Gilmore praised the efforts of Klemke in setting up the win on Saturday.

‘‘He was pretty dominant,’’ Gilmore said.

Klemke, a greyhound trainer, has been unable to play on a regular basis for Heathcote due to racing commitments.

‘‘It was only his third game on the weekend for us and it was good to have him,’’ Gilmore said.

‘‘He’s quite sharp. He would be one of the better quicks in the league.

‘‘He plays footy at Heathcote so that’s how we’ve been able to bring him on board.

‘‘Hopefully we can qualify him for finals.’’

The finals race has suddenly opened up with the previously undefeated Elmore losing on the weekend to Calivil.

Heathcote faces second-placed Dingee this weekend in a good test of the side’s finals credentials.

‘‘It will be a tough one,’’ Gilmore said of this weekend’s match.

‘‘They’re one of the pretty good teams in the league and we are in reasonable form so it will be a good challenge against a team we may come across in the finals.’’

Brayden Klemke took a stunning 6/19 for Heathcote Cricket Club on the weekend.
