THE VICTORIAN Country over 60 cricket side continued its undefeated season by toppling the Warrandyte over 60s in a competitive match at Barrack Reserve on Sunday.

Wavell McPherson, who will compete in the over 70 version of The Ashes against England in March, was part of the Victorian Country team.

After winning the toss, Victoria Country elected to bat and finished its 40 overs at 7/190. Paul Denton snared three wickets for Warrandyte while Noel Sharpe grabbed two.

In reply, Warrandyte never looked like troubling Victorian Country side and was bowled out for just 118 two balls into the 38th over.

Opener John Ryan top scored for Warrandyte with 34, accompanied by Ian Sharpe (27) who also offered some resistance.

Heathcote’s Trevor Sing — who played his first match for the Victorian Country side on the weekend – said the game was very enjoyable.

“It was my first game and I really enjoyed it, it was good to get the win in the end too,” Sing said.

“We batted really well to get to 190 from our 40 overs.”

Sing also praised the concept of the over 60s competition and the way it brought players together from all over the state.

“Players come from all over, in our team we have guys from Warrnambool to Heathcote just for a game of cricket and I reckon that’s great,’’ he said.

“Each batter in our team retires at 25 runs and we rotate the field as well so each player spends five overs off the ground to give everyone a go at it.

“When people are coming from far and wide you want everyone to have a hit.”
