Fires can still ‘get out of control quickly’

McIvor Times - - NEWS -

WHILE it’s been a quiet week for the Heathcote CFA, captain Carl Watkins said the end of the fire danger period (FDP) for the City of Greater Bendigo doesn’t mean it’s safe to light up.

The FDP has officially ended for residents in the City of Greater Bendigo area but Mr Watkins said locals need to be wary.

“Thankfully over the past week it’s been quiet and we hope it stays that way to an extent,” he said.

“Residents need to be mindful that we haven’t had a lot of rain so there is a lot of dry leaves and grass around.

“This means it’s easy for fires to get out of control quickly.”

Mr Watkins said any resi- dents planning a burn off should monitor the weather conditions closely and exercise common sense.

“There’s going to be days where the conditions are unsuitable — if it’s too windy there’s a chance for a fire to really take off,” Mr Watkins said.

“That’s a concern for us at this stage.”
