Motocross club hit by thieves

McIvor Times - - NEWS -

A GROUP of committed locals was gutted to find their storage sheds had been ransacked.

Last Wednesday a committee member arrived to utter destruction at the Toolleen Motocross track where a bobcat had been stolen and their property damaged.

The brazen thieves are said to have driven a truck through a neighbouring property.

The bobcat was stored in a shipping container and committee member Mick Hendy said the thieves must have known what they were looking for.

“It’s a bit odd what they’ve taken and what they’ve left, there are a lot of things which are just damaged,” he said.

“The shipping container is a difficult thing to get into. It was locked up and the tractor parked in front of the door.

“They broke into the tractor and ruined the ignition before they got a chain and pulled the container door open, they broke the lock and the welds off that.

“They either knew what they were doing or had time to get the tractor going because there’s a fairly specific way to start it.”

Mick said the committee was in disbelief they were the targets.

“It’s happened at a really bad time because we’re trying to get the track signed off so we can start to have races on it, we’re a new committee so to come out and find this, it’s pretty terrible,” he said.

There was damage to the canteen windows and metal guards, however Mick said there was nothing major missing.

“It’s just damaged. When we arrived the serving window was left wide open and there was a boot print on the seat in front of it — the police have dusted for prints,” he said.

The generator shed had the front ripped off, even though the door wasn’t locked, and there were signs of someone rummaging through the fuse box, Mick said.

But, in a true sense of community spirit, there were people offering to lend a hand.

The committee was planning a working bee for last weekend and it was still able to go ahead thanks to Bendigo Hire, Delecca’s Bobcat of Bendigo and Blue Shovel Earthmoving, who provided earthmoving equipment and their time.

“It’s amazing to have people donate those to us for the day,” Mick said. The committee has some big plans track-wise. “It was a bit of a high incident zone in the middle so we’ve been working on fixing that and hopefully we can bring the track back to its former glory,” Mick said.

“We’re looking for people to come along and join us as volunteers and even just come out and watch on a race day.”
