‘I believe every woman wants to wear feathers’
BEFORE coming to Heathcote for the On Show long weekend, burlesque performer Maple Rose took the time to answer some questions. What do you like about Heathcote/the On Show weekend?
The Heathcote on Show weekend is an amazing opportunity for a small town in rural Victoria to showcase what is so special about country life. As a Canadian who has only moved to Melbourne permanently about a year ago, I honestly hadn’t heard of Heathcote until I went out to visit the Silver Spoon Winery recently. The landscape and lifestyle is all so romantic, and really a dream getaway for a city-slugger. To showcase great food and wine alongside alternative entertainment, such as burlesque, really gets to spotlight the beauty that is rural Victorian life. What you think of the Silver Spoon wines?
I recently opened a bottle of Silver Spoon’s ‘Death and Taxes’ and it was a beautiful romantic drop on a cold winter’s night. 2018 Miss Burlesque Victoria Event:
I am currently preparing two brand new acts to compete in the Miss Burlesque Victoria competition, happening June 9 at Max Watts in Melbourne. Victoria’s competition is one of the toughest in the country as we have a huge influx of amazing performers who cross all styles of burlesque competing for the Victorian Crown. The winner will then move on to compete at the Miss Burlesque Australia finals in Perth in July. For this competition, we have to perform two acts — a ‘‘traditional’’ burlesque act, inspired by our predecessors in the art form, and a ‘‘unique’’ act, an act which is all about your own individual style.
As a musical theatre lover, and with a childhood of obsessing over the golden age of cinema and entertainment, my love of burlesque lies in the beauty in the vintage style of burlesque, and how the ‘golden age of burlesque’ has inspired the art form to be now in the 21st century. I believe every woman, in her heart of hearts, really wants to wear feathers, rhinestone and sequins at some point in her life. I have just found an excuse to do it every day.
