Woman’s best friend

TIFFANY BROWN, 21, AND AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD CLOONEY, 5 Trainee veterinary nurse Generation Z: 1990 – now

What I love about Clooney is that he is one of the happiest dogs I have ever met. He’s always wagging his tail and always wants to be with you. I’ve always had dogs and I don’t know what I’d do without one — you’re never lonely if you have a dog. My mum wanted to call him George Clooney, but I didn’t, so we settled on just ‘Clooney’.

My favourite memory with Clooney would be when we drove down to the beach and it was his first time there. I have never seen a dog so excited — he was in the water for hours! He constantly ‘talks’ to you as well and he also has a tennis ball that he likes to carry around.

If Clooney could speak I think he would say, “I can see you throwing those leftovers away and I don’t appreciate it.”

If I could write a letter to my dog I would tell him that my life is better with him in it and his constant happiness and joy is a gift.

JO DEVLIN, 50, AND GREAT DANE ACE, 10, AND STAGHOUND SHIRL, 2 Dog groomer Generation X: 1965 – 1980

What I love about Ace he is so easy going, a gentle giant and very loyal — he is just a cool dude with a beautiful temperament. What I love about Shirl is that she just loves everyone and is always happy — she has a sticky nose though, she is always into everything!

My favourite memory with Ace and Shirl would be hard to choose, I have so many favourite memories with them. I take Ace to the horse shows with me and people often say, ‘That is not a dog, it’s a horse’, which has gotten a bit old now! When I take the horses on a trail ride Shirl comes with me. I adopted her from the Cobram Pound and I think we really bonded on the trail rides. Shirl also sleeps on top of Ace sometimes, which is pretty cute.

If Ace and Shirl could speak I don’t know what they’d say. Ace has stiff back legs so I take him swimming a lot for his health, he loves it and I usually have to go and get him out of the water, so he’d probably say something about going for a swim.

If I could write a letter to my dogs I would tell Ace that he is just the dearest, sweetest dog, and to Shirl, I would say how funny she is and (thank her) for the laughs.
