Aubrey uncowed on Roe

Melville Times - - News -

MELVILLE Mayor Russell Aubrey believes the more than 5000 signatories to an online petition calling for Roe 8 to be built shows there is still widespread community support for the project.

Mr Aubrey said he believed the community remained firmly behind Roe 8 and the Perth Freight Link.

“The Maritime Union of Australia funded a multi-million dollar Labor campaign to stop Roe Highway in order to prevent the ultimate privatisation of Fremantle port and the fear that it would be automated and cost MUA members’ jobs,” he said.

“The environmental concerns were just a sideshow and can not be rationalised against the impact of the construction of the outer harbour.

“The community did not vote to support the MUA in this regard.

“Clearly with (incoming Bicton MLA and former Melville councillor) Lisa O’Malley and many other candidates benefitting from this funding, the Outer Harbour is just another furphy.”

Mr Aubrey said he remained committed to campaigning for the construction of the Perth Freight Link.

“Joe Francis was foremost amongst parliamentarians who were generally silenced by the Premier on Roe Highway, leaving me and the City of Melville to push the barrow and suffer union and activist rebuke on this matter for many years,” he said.

“The news is that I am not intimidated by the disgusting personal attacks or the threats and I will be continuing to fight for the Roe bypass for the safety and wellbeing of Melville, Cockburn and Fremantle residents.”

His comments came despite a landslide State Election win for Labor, which has vowed to scrap the Perth Freight Link.

New Premier Mark McGowan has already instructed contractors to put down their tools and is in the process of terminating contracts.

Defeated senior Liberal Joe Francis has publically stated the cost of cancelling Roe 8 could reach between $80 million and $100 million, while Mr McGowan believes the figure will be closer to $30 million.

The online petition is available atfore-it-s-too-late. Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey
