Melville Times - - News -

DECIDING to saddle up in support of prostate cancer research was an easy choice for Kardinya resident Arek Mazurek, who helps to treat patients with the disease every week.

The medical physicist is based at Fiona Stanley Hospital and is responsible for ensuring cancer patients receive an accurate dose of radiation therapy.

Mr Mazurek arrived in Perth from the UK two years ago and is gearing up for his second consecutive ProState Active bike ride.

“Although medical physicists don’t have a direct hands on relationship with patients we indirectly interact through the development of their treatment plans and the testing of delivered doses of radiation,” he said.

“I decided to sign-up for the ProState Active again because I’m passionate about cycling and enjoy the challenge.”

Held over two days beginning September 15, riders cover just over 300km from the Perth CBD to Bunbury and then on to Margaret River.

Many of the cyclists taking part are prostate cancer patients, survivors or family members and Mr Mazurek said he had been training with his 20-strong group since May.

“We’ve been gradually building up our distance each week and it’s great to get the know the other people that you are riding alongside,” Mr Mazurek said.

There are five teams participating in the ProState Active challenge and they have raised a combined total of $137,000 to date.

Funds raised from the ProState Active are donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
