Kats the cream of crop

THE years 7 and 12 Winnacott Kats teams are the pride of the club after both finished the regular season undefeated.

With 18 players notching 50 games for the club this year, the Year 7 Kats are reaping the rewards of a dedicated playing squad, according to coach Anthony Yerkovich.

“A lot of the boys have been playing together at the club for five or six years, with the majority starting from Auskick,” he said.

“What this club stands for since I’ve been involved is not winning but developing the boys and girls in all positions on the field, which has moulded these boys into an all-round side who can play various roles on game day.”

After rolling to 13 straight wins, compiling 818 points to just 160 along the way, the Year 7 Kats are now preparing for their first crack at finals football.

“This is our first finals campaign, so it is a bit of the unknown but myself and my assistant coach have great faith in this group and wherever the season takes us in 2017 it will still be a fantastic achievement by all the boys,” Yerkovich said.

Year 12 coach Ray Meadowcroft is also eyeing off a strong finals performance after his side powered to 14 regular-season wins.

“The group as a whole love their footy and work hard,” he said. “They are keen to learn and always embrace new ideas; they have worked extremely hard both in the preseason and season proper and their attitude is first-class.”

Finals were an exciting time that players handled in different ways, he said.
