THE City of Melville has vowed to find a new home for the long-running Stock Road Senior Citizens Club (SRRCC) but concedes it will be moved from its current location, at least temporarily.

The SRRCC has occupied its current premises near the corner of Canning Highway and Stock Road for close to 40 years and caters to nearly 150 members.

The Melville District Centre Activity Structure Plan was approved by the WA Planning Commission last month and the City of Melville is now advertising for proposals for a nearly 7500sq m pocket of land that includes the SRRCC site.

Melville chief executive Shayne Silcox said the SRRCC might be able to return to the site when the redevelopment was complete.

“A section of the request for proposal requires the successful proponent to provide an opportunity for a gathering and activity space, including the option for dining activities, which would provide an appropriate space for the current SRRCC to meet,” Dr Silcox said.

“While a temporary location may be needed before final relocation to a long term home, the SRRCC will not be left without a home/club space and will continue to operate.

“A dedicated City officer is already working alongside the club’s committee and will do so over the next 18 months to understand the club’s needs and relocation requirements, to find a suitable alternative location and to ensure the smoothest possible transition to an alternative venue.”

SRRCC treasurer and secretary Judy Harper said the club’s management lease ran until June next year and Melville LeisureFit across the road had been floated as a potential new location.

“A lot more discussion is needed yet – we take up quite a lot of space and because we have some kind of activity here every day of the week it could be difficult to share a space,” Mrs Harper said.

“Some of the members are also upset about the thought of relocation, especially if it ends up being far away. The majority are widows or widowers who come on their own looking for company.

“We’re in a good position here and many walk or catch the bus on Canning Highway.”

The site is zoned Centre C2, which allows a maximum building height of six-storeys and envisages retail and commercial uses on the ground floor, with residential and office space on the upper floors.
