Women snatch victory from jaws of defeat
EAST Fremantle Soccer Club were crowned champions of the Women’s Metropolitan Cup Final after a come-frombehind win over Joondalup City.
The team were two goals down and all but out of the game when a second half push saw them peg one goal back through Claire Vandermeren, then another via Tabitha Callander to level the game at 2-2 at the end of regular time.
In the penalty shootout, East Fremantle showed nerves of steel to win the title off the back of a Rosie Lang spot-kick.
East Fremantle coach Rob De Kleine said he was “ecstatic” with the win.
“The game plan worked out for us. We hoped to win in normal time but we got back from a couple of unlucky goals,” he said.
“All credit to the girls who kept believing in themselves and managed to get it back to 2-2 and finish it off on penalties.”
Down 0-2 at one point, East Fremantle rallied to win the Women’s Metropolitan Cup title in a penalty shoot out against Joondalup City.
