Melville Times - - Opinion -

I AM writing to voice my support of the proposed surf park at Tompkins Park.

I wouldn’t often voice my opinion but this is something I feel quite strongly about and I am confident it would have a positive impact on our community.

My husband has been surfing for more than 20 years in Perth but over the past couple of years he hasn’t been surfing in WA at all. There are several reasons for this lack of swell, risk of sharks, lack of time and lack of good-shaped waves when there is surf.

Surfing is such an iconic Aussie sport and I love the fact my husband surfs. It’s good for his mind and his body and it’s very social. We have a great surfing community in Perth.

This is a sport we would love our three children to participate in one day, but due to the lack of safe surfing spots in WA we are reluctant to teach them in the open water.

I think the wave park is something that would benefit our community and make better use of the active sports reserve.

Please take our younger generation into consideration when making decisions for the future. RACHEL GUNDERSON Bicton
