Coun­cil ap­points new ex­ec­u­tive

CITY of Melville has filled its tech­ni­cal ser­vices di­rec­tor role with a fa­mil­iar face, Mick McCarthy.

Coun­cil­lors en­dorsed Mr McCarthy, South West Group (SWG) di­rec­tor for the past six years, be­hind closed doors on Tues­day night.

He moves into the role va­cated by John Christie, who left his post on Oc­to­ber 27 af­ter nine years to be­come Bel­mont chief ex­ec­u­tive.

Mr McCarthy said he was look­ing for­ward to the new chal­lenge.

“This (role) pro­vides me with ca­reer pro­gres­sion,” he said.

His role in­cludes re­spon­si­bil­ity for roads, drainage, foot­paths, street light­ing, un­der­ground power and en­gi­neer­ing de­sign.

In a re­port to coun­cil­lors, em­ployee ser­vices of­fi­cer Ni­cholas Olds said five ap­pli­cants were in­ter­viewed for the job, which has a re­mu­ner­a­tion pack­age of up to $265,000 per an­num.

Mr McCarthy is ex­pected to start at the City af­ter serv­ing his three­month no­tice pe­riod with the SWG.
