Smart freeway technology will enable authorities to close and reopen traffic lanes, adjust speed limits, and provide emergency access during incidents, similar to the system used in the Northbridge tunnel.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said it could mean a saving of up to 10 minutes for citybound motorists.

Swan MHR Steve Irons said new emergency stopping bays would be added along the stretch for breakdowns or other road incidents.
