Sometimes talk therapy is the best medicine. Here’s how to find the right professional

Do you want strategies to help you cope? Or do you want to go deeper into your issues as you learn coping skills? The latter tends to bring more lasting results, says psychotherapist Celine Elise Alvarez. “Many therapists will do a free 10- to 15-minute phone consultation,” says clinical psychologist Angela Reiter. Do they recognise your symptoms and have a sense of how to help? If the therapist rushes you, move on. Seek evaluation by a licensed mental health practitioner and go from there. Psychiatrists are medical doctors, but psychologists, social workers, counsellors and licensed relationship and family therapists can also help. – C.R.
