Open to amateurs and professionals, the race is an off-road endurance event with terrain much tougher than that used in conventional rallying. French racer Stéphane Peterhansel has won the event a record 13 times in the motorcycle and car categories combined. Overall 70 people, including competitors, spectators and race officials have died since the event’s inception. The 40th edition of the race begins Jan 6 in Peru.
